Nathan “Gill” Sean Gillikin, a man who never met a yard project he didn’t like or a grandchild he didn’t adore, passed away on May 19, 2026, in Hampton, Virginia, at the age of 64. Born on May 11, 1962, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Gill spent his life bringing laughter, kindness, and steady guidance to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Gill worked as the Lead Rigger in Department X36 at Newport News Shipyard, where he didn’t just rig ships—he helped build confidence, skills, and friendships that lasted well beyond the job. He mentored countless coworkers throughout the years and earned recognition for both his work ethic and his character. Still, some of his favorite “awards” came much earlier in life from his sister Terry in the form of “tatoes” and hair barrettes — memories that perfectly captured his playful spirit and sense of humor.
When he wasn’t at work, Gill could usually be found outside working on a new yard project, building something imaginative, admiring his many dragon-themed collectibles, or spending time with his grandchildren. He had a gift for turning ordinary moments into lasting memories through storytelling, laughter, gentle teasing, and the simple comfort of being present. His hands were always ready to help someone in need, and he never left home without a smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances Gillikin.
Gill leaves behind his significant other, Kimberly McDonald; his sister Terry; brothers Phillip and Steve; two children; four stepchildren; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews who will forever remember him as the “cool uncle.” His legacy shines especially brightly through the three grandchildren who lived with him—Daesin Alvarez, Jamarrie Spring, and Aiden Justice—each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Anyone who knew Gill knew they were in the presence of a truly gentle and loving soul. He taught others not only how to work hard but also how to care deeply, laugh often, and show up for the people they love. His light and kindness will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
Services will be held privately by the family. In honor of Gill’s life and the kindness he showed everyone around him, the family encourages those who knew and loved him to celebrate his memory by spreading kindness, lending a helping hand, or taking a moment to teach someone something new — just as he so often did throughout his life.
