Ellen LaVerne Marslender Wheelbarger, born on January 11, 1941, in Belhaven, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, in Chesapeake, Virginia. She lived a full and vibrant life of 85 years, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

LaVerne graduated from John A. Wilkinson High School in her hometown of Belhaven, NC, before embarking on a diverse career. Her professional journey included roles at a doctor’s office, the Norfolk Health Department, a local funeral home, Odgen Foods, and finally, alongside her beloved husband, Jack, at Wheelbarger Repairs Service.

LaVerne was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, and friend. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Gammaw.” Known for her green thumb and love of gardening, she found peace and happiness among her plants and blooms. LaVerne was also an avid cook, collecting cookbooks and delighting family and friends with her culinary creations.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, John “Jack” Wheelbarger; her father, Earna Marslender; her mother, Eunice Gibbs Marslender; and her daughter, Sharon Wheelbarger Carey.

She is survived by her sons, Richy Wheelbarger and Drew Wheelbarger (Christie); her grandsons, Brandon Carey (Hannah) and Seth Wheelbarger (AnMarie); her granddaughters, Ella Wheelbarger, Haley Wheelbarger, and Summer Wheelbarger; and her bonus daughter, Janet Martin Kodmon. Her family extends beyond blood relations, as she touched many lives with her kindness and generosity.

In lieu of flowers, LaVerne requested that memorial donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, reflecting her lifelong dedication to helping others.

LaVerne’s warmth and gentleness will be remembered by all who knew her, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
