John Joseph Grant, III, a cherished husband, devoted father, and a man of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, in Newport News, VA, at the age of 64. Born on September 27, 1961, in Pittsfield, MA, growing up in New Lebanon, NY, John led a life marked by dedicated service, humble passions, and an enduring love for family and friends.
John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for over 23 years, during which he earned numerous prestigious awards and medals, a testament to his valor and commitment. Following his distinguished military career, he continued to share his expertise as a government contractor, where he taught mechanics on Black Hawk helicopters. His contributions in both roles left a lasting impact on those he worked with and helped guide.
Away from professional pursuits, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. As an avid NASCAR enthusiast, he held a deep admiration for Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and even took to racing himself on tracks in Tennessee. Known affectionately as “the Cat Dad,” John’s love for his feline companions was well-known among all who knew him. His passion extended beyond animals, with bowling being another beloved pastime and teaching opportunity for him.
Throughout his life, John’s faith served as a guiding force, instilling in him values of kindness, loyalty, and humility. A devoted husband, he shared 24 beautiful years with his beloved wife, Louann Grant. Together, they created a family filled with love, laughter, and warmth, values he passed on to his son, Shawn Mora, and grandchildren, Shawn Jr. and Alexas, as well as four great-grandchildren.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Grant, Jr. and Bobbie Grant; his sister, Jennifer McKeon; his grandparents; and many of his cherished cats. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Louann, son Shawn (Tara), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his siblings: Janice Toper (Marty), Jimmy Grant, Jane Muckle (Joe), and Joyce O’Brien. He will also be remembered fondly by his nieces, nephews, and a host of dear friends and extended family who were fortunate enough to have been touched by his kindness and generosity.
