Garrett Edward Duncan, Jr., 87, passed peacefully on March 26, 2026. Born in Ashland, Kentucky, on August 2, 1938, to Garrett and Katherine Duncan, he lived a life defined by devotion—to his family, to his country, and to the many communities he touched along the way.
Gary graduated from Virginia Tech in 1960 and soon after began a distinguished military career. A proud Vietnam Veteran, he went on to serve his country with honor for three decades, ultimately retiring from the United States Army at the rank of Colonel. His leadership, integrity, and steadfast commitment to service left a lasting impact on all who served alongside him.
A passionate sports fan, Gary found great joy in cheering for the Cincinnati Reds, the Washington Commanders, Kentucky Wildcat basketball, and Virginia Tech football. He also treasured time spent with his loved ones—especially as an adoring grandfather and great-grandfather. One of his favorite traditions was the annual family trip to Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, where memories were made year after year with friends and family.
Gary is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kitty Baker Duncan; his sons Mac (Margaret) Duncan and Will (Erin) Duncan; his grandchildren Austin, Evan (Jocelyn), Hailey (Nathaniel Rhodes), Isaac, and Andrew; and his greatgrandchildren Maren, Griffin, and Beckett. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg, Virginia.
