Carolyn Jeanette Brooks, affectionately known as “Momma C,” passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on February 16, 1949, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Carolyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
Carolyn was a proud alumna of Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC, where she formed lifelong friendships and cherished memories. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star and the Shriners, organizations that reflected her commitment to community and service.
Her life was filled with simple joys and profound love. Carolyn had a passion for reading and could often be found with a newspaper or her Bible in hand. She delighted in baking, always ready to share her delicious creations with family and friends. An avid coupon clipper, she enjoyed the thrill of finding a good deal. Carolyn loved watching the news and her favorite soap operas, and she was a devoted fan of VT football.
Above all, Carolyn’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a nurturing presence, always ready to feed others and offer a listening ear. Her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother brought her immense happiness, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, James Glover and Mary Leadbetter, as well as several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, James J. Brooks; her loving daughters, Marva Brooks and Amelia Carter (Lemar); her cherished grandchildren, Jaymes Brooks, Tavion Henderson, Siere Carter, and Charlene Bane; and her adored great-grandchildren, Xavier Brooks and Isaiah Brooks. She also leaves behind her dear brother, Willie Ratliff, along with numerous extended family members and friends who she considered family and will miss her dearly.
In honor of Carolyn’s generous spirit, we remember her words: “Give when you can, it could be God in disguise.” Her legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
