Henderson L. Bivens Jr., aka “Goose” or “Shag” passed away October 18, 2025.

He was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Mary E. and Henderson L. Bivens Sr. on September 11, 1946. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1966 and went into the U.S. Army – as he was happy to proclaim he had his 21st birthday in Vietnam.

Upon his return to civilian life, he formed a lifetime job with Virginia Electric and Power Company as a lineman. Later he moved up to trucker position and ended with heavy hauling, retiring February of 2005.

Henderson had a love for motorcycles and ’57 Chevy’s. Delighted in telling his adventures with both. He moved up to cruises, three times to Alaska, then Panama Canal, Hawaii, New England, and various Islands; but stopping due to a kidney transplant in October 2019. It lasted six years to the day. He died on his terms – fell asleep and went quietly into the “dark night”.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn H. Bivens; stepson, Gregory Marrett; grandson, Drake Marrett; granddaughter, Tiffany Linick; sisters, Elizabeth Mauney, Della Herring; brother, Franklin Bivens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held 5 PM, Sunday, November 23, 2025, at FBC Ashland, 800 Thompson St, Ashland, VA 23005. The family requests that guests wear jeans.

Henderson was an avid supporter of local food pantries. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to FBC Ashland and Promise Land Storehouses, 2401 Roxbury Rd, Charles City, VA 23030.
