Louis Saunders Smith, 83, of Newport News

Louis Saunders Smith, 83, passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2025, in the company of his family.

Louis was born to the late Louis Franklin and Virginia Saunders Smith in Newport News, VA, and lived most of his life in the city.

He attended Hilton Elementary School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1960. In his youth, he was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, participated in the Boy Scouts, and spent family summers in Nags Head, NC.

Louis went on to attend the University of Richmond and Colorado Alpine College. He served several years in the United States Army. Following college and his military service, Louis entered the family business, LouSmith Supermarkets. Later in life, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and children.

Louis was preceded in death by his brother, Spencer Ozlin Smith and infant son, Saunders Gentry Smith. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his children, Matthew Smith and Sarah Moreland and her husband, Lee; grandchildren, Randolph and Eleanor Moreland and his brother, Herbert Smith and his wife, Wendy.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at Peninsula Memorial Park.
