Laura F. Mickens, 68, of Newport News

Laura F. Mickens, born on November 30, 1956, in New York City, NY, passed away peacefully at the age of 68 on April 19, 2025, in Newport News, VA. Her life was a testament to the power of compassion, dedication, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Laura dedicated her professional life to serving others, working first as a social worker in New York before transitioning to a role as a Juvenile Detention Counselor for the city of Newport News. Through her tireless commitment and unwavering empathy, she touched countless lives, guiding and supporting those in need with grace and wisdom.

A devoted member of the Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Newport News, VA, Laura’s faith was a cornerstone of her existence. She was an active participant in church activities, especially the Bible Bowl, where she shared her knowledge and passion for scripture. Her warm presence and generous spirit enriched the lives of her fellow congregants and inspired those around her to live with kindness and purpose.

Laura’s culinary talents were well-known among family and friends. She had a special gift for bringing people together over hearty meals, delighting in the joy that her cooking brought to others. Her kitchen was filled with laughter, love, and the aroma of delicious dishes that will be fondly remembered by all who gathered there.

Above all, Laura adored her family, especially her cherished grandson, Jelani, who was the light of her life. Her daughters, Nicole and Yazmine Mickens, carry forward her legacy of strength and compassion, embodying the values she instilled in them. Her brother, Joseph A. Mickens, and sister, Judith Stewart-Howard (Jimmie), along with her nephews Abdul, Ishmael, Jimmie (JJ), Isaiah, great-nephews Elijah, Aden, and Amir, and great-nieces Amina, Jazzlyn, and Isra, will forever hold her memory close, honoring her life by living with the love and integrity she exemplified.

Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Lehman College, demonstrating her commitment to education and lifelong learning. Though preceded in death by her beloved parents, Katherine DeWees and Raymond Dewees, Laura leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and unyielding faith.

Her life was a beacon of hope and inspiration, and her spirit will continue to guide those she touched. Laura F. Mickens will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as her love lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
