Gladell Merita Simmons Carter, 87, passed away peacefully January 23, 2025 at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia with her family by her side.

Gladell was born in Toccoa Falls, Georgia to Emily Blanche (Roberts) and George Simmons, the oldest of four children. Gladell graduated from Belton High School in Belton, South Carolina in 1956, and was soon married to the love of her life Jammie David Carter, who preceded her in death February 27, 1998. Gladell and Jammie had three children, David Bryan(deceased), Sherri Gladell and Douglas Wayne. Gladell had eight grandchildren, Bailey, Landon, J.D., Matthew, Casey, Douglas, Janie and Robert, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Gladell was a loving and supporting wife to her husband through his 24-year Navy Career, which included stops in Charleston, S.C., Gaum, Washington, D.C., and Norfolk, Virginia. Gladell served in the Civil Service with the PEB and at CINCLANFLT. Gladell loved her family, sewing, cooking and caring for her family. She was a member of several Christian churches over the years, and her faith in Christ was a central part of her life.

Gladell will be laid to rest alongside her husband Jammie David Carter at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests family and friends to consider a gift in her memory to the Disabled American Veterans Association or Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Elizabeth City, NC.
