Louise Hildegarde Fudala, (Hosfield; Cooke) passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia. She was 82 years old.
Born on March 13, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Dr. William and Evelyn Hosfield, Louise embodied a spirit of gentle determination that would define her life’s journey. She graduated from West Point High School in 1959 and went on to graduate from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia and later from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she earned her master’s degree in biology, Louise demonstrated early on her passion for learning and teaching.
Her courage and independence shone through when she embarked on a transformative journey across Canada, leaving behind her beloved home of eighteen years in Halifax, Nova Scotia to forge her own path. For nearly two decades, she shared her love of science with students at Lakeland College, in Alberta, where her patient guidance and genuine interest in her students’ success left an indelible mark on countless lives.
Life came full circle when Louise reconnected with Tommy Fudala, a childhood friend who had gone on to become a talented musician and entertainer. Their reunion led to a beautiful marriage at historic Christchurch in Middlesex County, Virginia (the very church her mother attended as a child) in August 2015, writing a wonderful new chapter in both their lives.
Louise found great joy in supporting others in their pursuits. Her unwavering encouragement helped shape not only her own children’s paths but also inspired those around her to reach for their dreams. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued and heard, creating a warm presence that drew people to her.
Her life’s journey took her from West Point, Virginia to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lloydminster, Alberta, and finally Richmond, Virginia but her heart remained constant in its capacity for kindness and understanding.
Louise is survived by her son, Hilary Cooke (April) of Edmonton, Alberta, and daughter, Jessamine Cooke-Plagwitz (Frank) of DeKalb, Illinois; her siblings, Richard Hosfield and Kathryn Fearon; and her beloved grandchildren, Malcolm and Meagan Kellett-Cooke, and Michaela and Franziska Plagwitz.
She was predeceased by her husband, Tommy Fudala, joining him very shortly thereafter, and her parents, Dr. William and Evelyn Hosfield.
Louise and Tom’s family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m, Sunday, January 26, 2025 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, VA, with a joint funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Please note, there will be no procession to the cemetery following the service.
Those who knew Louise will remember her as she wished to be remembered: as a kind and supportive presence who made everyone around her feel valued and cherished.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
