Alva Dalton Adkins, 87, of Charles City, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

Born on November 29, 1937, in Charles City County, he was the son of Van and Geraldine Adkins. During his early years, he was lovingly raised by his Momma Mary and Poppa Lee, and later by his Momma Nellie and Uncle Gus. Alva graduated in 1957 from Bacone College in Bacone, Oklahoma.

Alva was preceded in death by his daughter, Gaynelle Adkins, and son Greg Adkins. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Janet; his son, Loren (Lisa); his daughter, Casey (Butch); daughter-in-law, Val; grandchildren Ryan, Matthew, Grace, Noah, and Carter; great-grandchildren Katrina and Raylan; brother Merle; sisters Thelma, Pearl, Gwen, Linda, Rose, Edith, Hilda, and Audrey and a host of adoring nieces and nephews.

Alva retired after 40 years of dedicated service as a diesel mechanic with E.R. Carpenter. A faithful man of God, he loved attending services at Samaria Baptist Church. Known for his gentle and kind nature, Alva never met a stranger. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including sitting on his porch, watching hummingbirds and other birds at his feeder, and cheering on the Washington Redskins and Dale Earnhardt.
Above all, Alva cherished his family and his faith in God. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud grandfather and great grandfather. His love, kindness, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to extend special thanks to nurses Kathryn and Carrie for their compassionate care and to Tammy for her love and support.

A funeral service will be held 2 pm Wednesday, January 15 at Samaria Baptist Church, 8130 Lott Cary Rd. Providence Forge, VA. The family will receive friends from 12-2pm prior to the service at the church. A private family burial will take place at a later date. The family will welcome guests to the Chickahominy Tribal Center, located adjacent to the church, immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Chickahominy Tribe.
