Thomas Kunkle Hutchens passed away on Friday, December 20, 2024 at the age of 84 with his family by his side.
Tom was born in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Eloise and Lewis Hutchens. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1958 and received his Pharmacy degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1962. That summer he married his wife of 62 years, Marian Barnhill of Newport News.
Tom started his career as a “soda jerk” and delivery boy at White’s Pharmacy in Hilton Village, owned by Bill Neale. Upon graduating from MCV, he followed Bill to the newly built Hidenwood Shopping Center. Tom and his partner, Al Mitchell, purchased Hidenwood Pharmacy in 1978 when Bill retired. At Al’s untimely death in 1989, Tom’s daughter, Anne, having just graduated from MCV Pharmacy School became his right-hand pharmacist until his retirement in 2005. Anne became President and owner of Hidenwood Pharmacy, the longest continuously operating pharmacy on the Peninsula since 1959.
Tom was a past president of the Peninsula Pharmaceutical Association and a lifetime member of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association. He was passionate about pharmacy, giving talks to many local organizations, retirement homes and always had time to listen and give advice to his customers at Hidenwood because they always came first. He returned as a delivery boy for a while after Anne became the owner.
After retiring, Tom and Marian moved to Williamsburg, Virginia where they enjoyed playing golf and having more time to spend with their friends and family at their beach home in Southern Shores, North Carolina.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Marian; his daughter, Anne Hutchens (Gene) of Seaford, Virginia; his sons, Christopher Hutchens (Laura) of Poquoson, Virginia and Hunter Hutchens (Leslie) of Herndon, Virginia; 2 grandchildren, Tom Hutchens of Williamsburg and Charlie Hutchens of Herndon and his brother, Walter Hutchens (Lynn) of Waynesboro.
The family would like to thank Spring Arbor of Williamsburg, for their loving and compassionate care of Tom during his last 3 years, and especially Cassandra, Lisa, Keshia and his care worker Victoria Byrd.
The family will hold private services.
