Bert Fournier, born June 12, 1943, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, at the age of 81 surrounded by family. Bert and his wonderful wife Carolyn built an incredible life together in the 56 years they’ve shared.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and four daughters: Shannon (Mike), Carrie, Ann Marie (Derek), and Cindy. Bert also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Lindsey, Maigen, Breeanna, Madison, Gabby, Hunter, Olivia, and Van as well as his great-grandchildren: Natalie, Kaiden, Dax, and Emersyn.
A proud Marine Corps Veteran, Bert also had a long and fulfilling career in civil service in addition to being the owner of a successful container hauling company. When he wasn’t working he could often be found with a fishing rod in hand, proudly showing off his beloved Chevy truck, or tinkering away in his workshop. But what really brought him joy was being surrounded by his friends and family from the comfort of his recliner.
Bert was a man of deep faith and devotion to God. After retiring with Carolyn to their dream home in Edenton, NC, Bert embraced the simple pleasures of life: being debt-free, having no obligations, and only needing to make the most important decision of the day: “Where are we going to eat?”
Known to many as a mentor, friend, and father figure, Bert’s kindness and generosity were unmatched. It’s no exaggeration to say there wasn’t a person who didn’t love Bert—his warm heart, quick wit, and wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone he met. And let’s not forget his infamous fish frys which was an event not to be missed.
As we say goodbye, we know Bert is now resting high on the mountain knowing that his work here is done. His legacy of love, laughter, and living life on his own terms will be forever remembered. Semper Fi, Bert. You’ve earned your peace.
The family will gather to Celebrate Bert’s life on Saturday, January 11, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnels to Towers.
