James Elmo Davis was born November 3,1943 at his home in the Snake Creek section of Fancy Gap, Virginia.
The family home had no running water, they cooked on a wood stove, and the outhouse was nearby. James walked to school each day and after school he worked the land to help his family. He finished school at 4th grade. At an early age James was gifted with his hands and strived for more; woodworking, building furniture, decks and custom cabinet making, which he continued for most of his life.
James enjoyed camping, fishing, walking the land, relic hunting and his guns. Most of all he was dedicated to his family. “Elmo,” as he was often called, helped others and was devoted to making sure he took care of his family, neighbors and his church. He also enjoyed a good cup of coffee with friends at the Waffle House.
James Elmo is survived by his wife of 59 years, Catherine Davis; brothers and in-laws Willie and Roy (Janice) Davis, and Harold Burke (Debra); three daughters, Virginia Kelm (Christopher), Tammy Smith and Amy Pike (Tommy); grandchildren, Tabbatha Pike, James Dalton and Katie Jett, and Ashley Kelm; and great-granddaughters, Hennessey and Remi Haynes, and Zya Jett.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Clara Davis; nephews, Willie and Randy Davis; a grandson, Thomas Sydney Pike III; as well as his good friend and son-in-law, Gary Smith.
At 80 years of age on October 26, 2024, James Elmo passed away peacefully.
