Mary (Margie) Margaret Hill age 74, formerly of San Antonio passed away Saturday, June 8, 2024, at home surrounded by family. She is a graduate of St. Francis Academy and St. Francis College and received her BA in Social Work from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She served 10 years on active duty as an Operating Room Specialist and did the remaining time in the US Army Reserves retiring in July 2009. During her active duty time she obtained the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. She later obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Registered Nurse diplomas from the Riverside Nursing School. Margie worked with dedication at the Newport News Health Department where she provided quality care. She retired as the school nurse for Menchville High School in Newport News in 2020. During her tenure at Menchville High School her fluency in Spanish enabled her to provide language translation assistance for students from Spanish speaking countries attending school in the United States for the first time.
Margie was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, GFWC Woman’s Club of Hilton Village and an active member of St Jerome Catholic Church. Her talents were many, she was extremely accomplished at crafting home made gifts, an avid gardener with a green thumb, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, community volunteer and friend who loved to assist anyone in need. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, eating out at new restaurants, swimming, taking cruises to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean and visiting her favorite island of Aruba (One happy island). Margie collected Angel figurines to hallmark precious moments, crystal figurines from trips around the world as well as local crafts and antiques.
Preceded in death by her parents Juan Julian Gonzalez Sr and Amada Acevedo, and two brothers Gabriel and Juan. She is survived by her best friend and husband of 40 years, Ronald L; son Donte Hill, two daughters Nicole Hill and Tisha Scholes along with her husband Jason, one grandson, Reylen Hill, two granddaughters Angelina and Kaylan Scholes as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her family will receive friends for the viewing from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday, June 21 2024 at the Altmeyer Denbigh Chapel 12893 Jefferson Ave, Newport News VA 23608. Funeral services will be held directly after at 1:00 PM at the Altmeyer Denbigh Chapel. Burial will be at 3PM at the Peninsula Memorial Park 12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News VA 23606.
