Joyce Combs Banks passed away from this life on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at her home. She was born June 15, 1936, the oldest daughter born to the late William Casey Combs and Pauline Lawson-Harrison, in Seaford, Virginia

She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1954. She met the love of her life, the late Wallace E. Banks Sr., and spent 65 years as his devoted wife.

Joyce worked for Newport News Public Schools for over 20 years, where she enjoyed working with her colleagues and students.

At an early age, Joyce accepted the Lord and joined the Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance. She participated in the Adult Choir, Women’s Fellowship, and was the church Appointment Secretary. Joyce loved the Lord and attended church faithfully on Sundays.

Joyce was a loving wife, an exceptional mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a caring and loving person who never met a stranger. She had an outgoing personality and if you needed her, she was there for you. Joyce was a babysitter for many families in the Denbigh area. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She loved spending time with her family and took great pride in them. She was an avid shopper and if she was not at home, you could find her either at Macy’s, T.J. Maxx, or Marshalls. Joyce loved drinking Pepsi Colas, eating Hershey Chocolate Bars, and watching soap operas. She was also an avid reader and one of her favorite authors was Danielle Steele.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wallace E. Banks Sr. and son Steven O. Banks.

A life well lived and enjoyed is the legacy she leaves for all who knew and loved her. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Wallace E. Banks Jr. (Geneva), Dr. Michael P. Banks (Michelle), and Norman Banks (Norma); thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; sister Rosaline Combs-Winfree (Russell); sister-in-law Shirley Hales (Larry); two brothers in law, John Walter Banks Sr. and Elwood Banks (Evelyn); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and caring friends.

A special thanks from the family to her caregivers; Augusta Bangura and Agnes Koroma who took exceptional care of Joyce. Also special thanks to Riverside Hospice.

A service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance. Interment will take place at a later date in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Mrs. Banks may be viewed on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the church.
