It is with sorrow the family announces the passing of Doris Alese Sweeney Bowen.
Doris was born in Newport News, the daughter of the late Charles B. and Pearl Hazelwood Sweeney. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Richmond, Va. After graduating from high school and business college, Doris worked 13 years for the RF&P Railroad.
In early 1954 Doris met the love of her life E. Grady Bowen Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Grady Bowen Sr. of Hampton, Va. Doris and Grady were married in Richmond, Va. In April 1955 and moved to Newport News and later to Hampton, Va. Doris worked for the C&O Railroad, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Newport News Shipbuilding before becoming a full time housewife.
Doris was a member of Sunday School classes and Riverside Baptist Church for over 60 years.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 nephew.
Survivors are Marjorie M. Lambert of Newport News, John T. Benthall and wife Dorothy of Hampton, Shirley E. Benson of Smithfield, long time aide and friend Sylvia Jordan of Portsmouth, and nephew Harvey Sweeney of Hollywood, Fl.
Funeral services will be privately held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond, Va.
