Daniel Allen Kline of Lynchburg

Daniel Allen Kline (Vincent Funeral Home)

Daniel Allen Kline was born in Newark, New Jersey, where his father worked in the family grocery/soda fountain store. Dan often repeated memories from Grandpa’s store of the pickle barrel, candy counter and drink dispensers that allowed you to mix seltzer with syrup. He graduated from Colonia High School and had various jobs in the area including at a friend’s pizza restaurant. He attended one year of college at the University of Dubuque, Iowa and enjoyed numerous road trips. Cousin Laurie remembers that Danny was always a free spirit, marching to the beat of his own drummer.

Dan lived in Austin and Dallas, Texas for a time and suffered a severe back injury when he fell from scaffolding while working as a high-rise window cleaner. Thereafter he suffered chronic back pain. When his Dad died in 1986 Dan returned to New Jersey to help his mother. Shortly thereafter they both followed his sister, Judy to Virginia. Dan purchased an old Victorian house in Garland Hill in 1991 and remained a Lynchburg resident for the rest of his life, spending all of his free time and money transforming this property from unlivable to remarkable. He also used his considerable knowledge and expertise in all the building trades to work for neighbors and other homeowners.

Dan met his future wife, Goldie, in 1999 when they both lived on the same street in Garland Hill, and discovered that, among other things, they shared a love of cats. When Danny was diagnosed with aggressive cancer in May, 2023, he declined the available treatments with their severe collateral damage, preferring to allow the disease to run its natural course. He remained stoic and independent to the end, insisting that he would die in the home that he had created. Daniel is survived by wife, Goldie McQuaid; mother-in-law, Dorothy (Dot) Wade; sister, Judith Kline, and cats: Margie, Rosa, Pilar & Sylvia. The family wishes to thank Centra Hospice, especially RN’s Kasie, Rebekah, Paula & NP Melanie. Donations in Daniel’s name can be made to Lynchburg Humane Society.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Peninsula Memorial Park by Rabbi Séverine Sokol.
