Thuy (Meri) Nguyen-Otten passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 6, leaving behind a profound void in the hearts of those who knew her.
Meri was born on September 29, 1970.She was the proud mother of Alexandra (Lexi) Nguyen Otten, her only child, who meant the world to her. Meri cherished her role as a mother more than anything, pouring her endless heart and soul into raising Lexi.
Meri was beloved by her large family, which included sisters, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. She cherished her family, finding joy and comfort in their presence. Meri had a stubborn yet endearing nature. Though she could be spirited and strong-willed, she will ultimately be remembered as having the kindest heart. She was committed to her community and volunteered annually with The Giving Heart organization of Richmond.
Those who were fortunate enough to know her witnessed the wit she brought to many situations. Her spirit was a testament to her strength. Meri’s passion was so intense at times that her family sometimes referred to family gatherings as the “Nguyen Storm”.
Meri will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness, selflessness, and unwavering love will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Meri was a 1988 graduate of Indian River HS in Chesapeake, VA. She went on to study accounting at Radford University, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University where she graduated with a B.S. & Master’s in accounting. She spent many years working in the Richmond area as a CPA for multinational corporations.
She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Peter D Nguyen. She is survived by her loving daughter Alexandra “Lexi” Nguyen Otten; mother, Phuong Phi “Valerie” Duong, her siblings, Lan Mosqueda, Johnny Nguyen, Thao Balsamo and her husband Luke, Prissie Nguyen, and Mari Nguyen. Her absence will also be deeply felt by her nieces and nephews, Jonathan Mykham, Jovi Nguyen, Kristina Mosqueda, Montana Showalter, Kiara Ramos, and Jaden Elliott. She leaves behind numerous extended family members and friends, all of whom were touched by her kindness and unwavering love.
A memorial mass will be held in honor of Meri’s life at noon on Saturday, February 17 at The Church of the Holy Family, located at 1279 N. Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach. A reception will follow the service at the church.
Though her time among us was cut short, Meri’s strength, perseverance, and warm heart will be fondly remembered by those who loved her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
