Shirley Phyllis Jones peacefully entered eternal rest on October 9, 2023, in Richmond, VA.
Shirley was born on July 29, 1950 to the late James and Erselle Jones. Shirley was preceded in death by her six brothers Oatha “Curtis,” Eugene and James Jones Claude, Alfredo and Trent “TC” Elliot; and five sisters Mamie Cotman, Ethel Navarro, Iris Jones, Iva “Mae” Torres and Rosa Brown. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister Eva Jones Sostre of Charles City, brother Harrison Jones of Henrico, and a host of nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in Christ, the Glendale Community and a very special and devoted niece Mary E. Jones.
Shirley accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Sterling Baptist Church. As a resident of Richmond, she attended First Union Baptist Church. Her love of Christ led her to a certificate/degree in Biblical Studies from the Institute of Biblical Studies at Liberty University. She had an extensive knowledge of the Bible and was always eager to minister to faces familiar and unknown. Shirley had a calling to bring folks to the Lord. She was admired for her kind and gentle nature. Shirley was the epitome of quick to give and slow to take.
Shirley was an esteemed graduate of Ruthville High School in Charles City, VA. Pursuing a higher education, she attended Virginia State University with ambitions to teach with a concentrated interest in biology and history. Always desiring to learn, she also studied at J. Sargeant Reynolds. Shirley was truly dedicated in everything she did. She worked in Computer Operations & Medium Systems Tech support at First Union National Bank (now Wells Fargo) for over 20 years.
She was always willing to extend help and offered an impactful hand that aided many family members. Shirley’s kindness also extended to her countless donations to worthy causes such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Children’s International Network to name a few. She was very intelligent, independent, and intuitive. She was not only biblically and advanced, but she also was blessed with everyday smartness as she could help find better solutions for every day troublesome issues.
Shirley was a strong, quietly bold woman with a gentle voice and a loud, loving heart. Her family and friends will greatly miss her sweet smile and source of strength.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2023, at Vincent Funeral Home – 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, Virginia. Interment Old Elam Cemetery.
