Robert Webb was unique among men and during his too short life made his mark on the world. Robert was born in Pittsburgh and although he moved to Virginia Beach in his youth, Pittsburgh never left him; and throughout his life he had a passion for everything Pittsburgh and in particular for his beloved Steelers. Robert was a proud and a lifelong member of the “Steeler Nation”.
Robert was born with a mild disability and cognitive limitations that impacted his development. He struggled as a youth, spent time in foster care where he thrived and was supported, but still maintained a strong connection with his natural family—his parents and siblings.
Robert had a strong work ethic, but as a young adult had difficulty finding the right kind of job. As he got older, he became more successful in the world of work and was most proud of his tenure as a maintenance worker with the Virginia Beach School Board. During the last few years, Robert not only had a job in the private sector, but also developed his own lawn maintenance business. He worked hard and was respected by his loyal customers.
Robert’s most important contribution to the community was his advocacy work. He identified strongly with people with disabilities and was instrumental in establishing the People First Action Club that advocated for better funding and more services. Robert was the president of People First for many years and even when he was not in charge, he remained active and worked hard. Over the years Robert received several awards for efforts that last being recognition from Hearts and Homes, an organization that provides housing for people with developmental disabilities.
Most importantly, Robert was a people person. He cared about his friends, and looked out for them. In the midst of his short journey, Robert formed deep connections with his family and friends, who will forever hold him close in their hearts. He is survived by his loving mother, Carolyn Webb of Virginia Beach; sisters Carol (David) Alspaugh and Debra Thompson; brothers Frederick Webb Jr. and John Webb. Additionally, he was blessed with a foster family, including foster mother Patricia McMahon and foster siblings Kim and Wayne Sandlin, Korene Cohen, Kristine and Todd French, Kelli and Michael Conner, and brother Kevin and Wendy Kraemer.
Robert’s nieces and nephews, Ryan and Azucena Alspaugh, Allison Alspaugh, Angel Warren, James and Abby Purcell Jr., Kari and Sam Johnson, and Michael Warren Jr., were all touched by their presence and will always carry the memory of their sweet and gentle spirit.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved father, Frederick Webb, whose memory will forever live on.
Services to honor Robert’s life will be held at Raleigh Heights Baptist Church, October 28, at 4 p.m., please join us as we gather to celebrate the remarkable person Robert was and bid him farewell, food will be available as we share memories following the services.
In our hearts, Robert’s memory will shine brightly, reminding us to embrace each day with gratitude and compassion. Robert’s life was cut short too soon. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
