Lottie Gladis Joyner, affectionately known as Gladys, was born on December 15, 1937, in Virginia. She peacefully departed this world on October 6, 2023, in Newport News, Virginia. She was 85 years old at the time of her passing.

Gladys led a remarkable life filled with love, compassion, and dedication. Her work experience as an administration/payroll professional at the Federal Aviation Administration showcased her commitment to excellence and her unwavering work ethic. She approached every task with diligence and grace, leaving a lasting impact on those she worked with.

Beyond her professional achievements, Gladys had a wide range of interests that brought her joy and fulfillment. She found solace in the art of bowling, the creativity of sewing and knitting, and the mental stimulation of puzzles. These hobbies allowed her to express her unique talents and connect with others who shared her passions.

Gladys was also deeply committed to serving her community and making a difference in the lives of others. Following the heartbreaking loss of her first-born son, James Hosea Wheeler, she dedicated her time to the NYC Department of the Aging as a foster grandparent. Her nurturing spirit and unconditional love brought comfort and support to countless children in need.

Gladys had her Tribal Card from Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia where she was given the name Blue Bird. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she was an active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Passaic, New Jersey. Through her involvement in the QHC Auxiliary, she demonstrated her unwavering commitment to helping others and spreading kindness wherever she went. Furthermore, she served on the Board of Elections for 15 years, a true asset to her community.

Gladys was a proud graduate of George Washington High School, class of 1955. The friendships she formed during her school years remained cherished throughout her lifetime, and she held those memories close to her heart.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Zachariah Howell and Lottie Mae Boone Howell, her beloved son James Hosea Wheeler, her sisters Arlene Holloway and Evelyn Watford, her brother James Hosea Howell, and her great-grandbaby Arianna. Although their absence is deeply felt, their spirits will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved them.

Gladys leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her children Jacqueline Dyan Hutchinson, Antoinette Louise Cruz (Robert Beaty), and William Lloyd Joyner IV. Her grandchildren James Wheeler, Kevin Wheeler, Tierra Grant (Lord Michael Grant), Theresa Cruz, Anthony Franklin, and Christopher Hutchinson will forever carry her spirit with them. Additionally, she leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren: Jaylin, Jayden, Esteban, Matthew, Athena, Elijah, Chantelle, Londyn, Lord Michael, Jayden, Jeremiah, Unique, Amerie, Anthony Jr., Avery, Donavin, Tristan, and Kathleen.

Services to honor and celebrate Gladys’ life will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023. A visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a service at 3 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home- Denbigh Chapel, located at 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23608.

Gladys will forever be remembered for her unwavering strength, her infectious smile, and her ability to bring joy to those around her. Her legacy will continue to inspire us all to live with kindness, compassion, and a zest for life. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
