James O. Marks, 70, of Newport News

James O. Marks (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

James O. Marks passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023. He was born in Newport News.

“Jimmie” graduated St. Vincent High School (now Peninsula Catholic High School) in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school and started working for Newport News Shipbuilding, where he also retired after a long career. Jimmie volunteered many hours serving at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Bede’s Catholic churches, as well as Peninsula Catholic High School. He was an avid reader and skilled swimmer. While not having children of his own, he was very much thought of as a father figure by his nieces and was loved and respected by all that knew him. He was truly a kind soul and will be greatly missed.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Oren & Marian Marks; his younger brother, Michael Marks, and his twin and life-long best friend, John Marks. He is survived by his three nieces, Gina Wilburn (Tom), Kelly Birchfield (Ron, deceased) and Casey Bellman (Justin); 8 great nephews & nieces: Ryan, Haley, Alex, Kyle, Kamren, Kennedy, Kooper and Kolton.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will follow at Commonwealth Senior Living, 236 Commons Way, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Marks Trust Fund at Peninsula Catholic High School, 600 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.
