John J. Balog, Jr, 90, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, went to be with God on April 27, 2023. He was born on March 28, 1933, in Corry, PA to the late John and Mary (Wascak) Balog.
After serving in the Army during the Korean War he went on to work for GC Murphy Company/Murphy Marts in Washington DC, where he met Barbara F. Klein. They were married on June 22, 1957 and went on to have four children. His career sent them through PA, LA, MD, and VA. They lived in Cumberland for 37 years where John retired before relocating to Virginia Beach in 2015.
John led a simple yet fulfilling life, finding joy in the simple pleasures like gardening and spending time with his family. John was an avid hunter and also enjoyed woodworking, pouring his heart and soul into every project he undertook. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, always ready with a kind word or helping hand. His selfless nature and compassionate heart touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, Daughters; Christine Stacy (Tim), Diana Smith (Chuck), Mary Stegmaier (Joe), Son, Jim Balog, 10 Grandchildren, and 8 ¾ great grandchildren.
A rosary service will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 5 p.m. with a visitation to follow from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass will be held at St Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 10 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. Burial will follow at Albert G Horton, Jr, Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk at 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to come is welcomed, there will not be a procession.
