Alphonso Fitzgerald Manning Sr., affectionally known as “Phonso”, was born on August 12, 1964, to the late Katherine and Otis Manning Sr. He transitioned from this life on March 28, 2023, at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital in Williamsburg, VA.
At an early age, he accepted Christ at a young age at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Barhamsville VA. He attended New Kent County public schools. After high school, he was employed at The Williamsburg Pottery and lastly at The Colonies At Williamsburg.
Alphonso enjoyed music and loved to sing. He also had a passion for hunting and fishing. Spending time with family and friends made his heart smile. Alphonso was a diehard Washington Commanders fan, formally known as the Washington Redskins. He was a loving and adoring father and grandfather who had a big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He made his children and grandchildren feel extra special. He was also a devoted brother and proud uncle who held a special place in his heart for his niece, Lakia “Kia” King and nephew, William “Billy” Manning.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry Manning and Otis Manning Jr.; sister, Maxine Griffin; and granddaughter, Sahmarlynn Pittman.
He leaves to cherish his memories with his children, Lashannon Cephas, Alphonso “AJ” Manning Jr., Shyanne Weriei, Princess Lyon-Dixon, Ryan Lyon, and Laphonso Lyon; thirteen grandchildren; his significant other, Josepha Saladier; three brothers, Jerry Manning (Joyce), Marshall Manning (Geraldine), and Alan Manning (Stephanie); one sister, Lavern Ashley (Kennedy); special niece, Lakia King (Donnell Wilkins); special nephew, William Manning; special friend, William Gaye; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Whiting’s Funeral Hone. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Manning may be viewed from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Facial coverings are required for all services.
