James Robert “Shorty” Tabb answered the Master’s call to meet his Creator on February 23, 2023. His life began on October 3, 1935, to the late Anita Tabb and Robert Taylor.
At an early age, he confessed Christ as his Personal Savior and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Charles City, Va. Later in life, he joined New Zion Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA, where he was an active member until his health began to fail.
He was a long-time employee of Casey Department Store, Forest Henry Upholstery, Williamsburg Community Hospital, and the Williamsburg-James City County Public School System.
“Shorty,” as he was affectionately called, was a funny guy and was always the life of the party. He loved to dance and really could dance. At parties, you will see “Shorty” being the first and last one on the floor. He was a well-rounded man, who was known for always being neatly dressed and would never be seen driving a dirty car. He was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers’ fan. He also loved attending softball tournaments, telling corny jokes, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Buster Tabb; two sisters, Mary Brown and Helen Mason; and son, Wendell Tabb.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his lovely wife of sixty-five years, Maurice Tabb; son, James Lorenzo Tabb; daughter, Anita Sharmaine Tabb; sisters-in-law, Shirley Wynn (Conway) of Williamsburg, VA and Brenda Thomas of Daytona Beach, FL; brother-in-law, Edmond Braxton of Williamsburg VA; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2023, at Bethel Restoration Center. Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Tabb may be viewed beginning at noon Friday in the church. Facial coverings are required for all services.
