Malinda Dornay Johnson of Newport News, Va, was called home to be with our Heavenly Father on Sunday afternoon, October 9, 2022.
Malinda was born to the late Aroy and Jessie Lee Abrams of Yorktown, VA, on October 19, 1953. At a young age, she accepted the Lord as her Savior and joined Rising Sun Baptist Church in Lackey, Va.
Malinda graduated from York High School in 1971. She was on the planning committee and was able to join them in celebrating their 50th high school class reunion by Zoom. Malinda continued her education at Thomas Nelson Community College.
Malinda began her professional career at Malcom Pirnie Inc. and at the Newport News Shipyard, then pursued her career as a legal secretary with Arnold and Porter Law Firm in Washington, DC.
Malinda had a natural gift for singing. She sang with several church choirs and other groups, including The Rumbling Raiders and The Gospel Persuaders.
She was also predeceased by her husband Wilbur “Phil” Johnson, son Barry Robinson Jr., sister Lillian Kenner, paternal grandparents Gussie and Irene Abrams, and maternal grandparents Tony and Lydia Geter.
Malinda is survived by her loving sisters, Debra Lee (James), Monica Shaw (Bruce), and Monique Palmer (Melvin); brother, Aron Kennedy (Garlita); close friend, James Dinkins; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Inova Fairfax Hospital and Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital ICU Staff for their outstanding professional care.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, October 22, 2022, at St. John Baptist Church, Williamsburg. Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Johnson may be viewed on Saturday beginning at 11.00 a.m.
