Abigail Rule Metzger, of Richmond, Virginia, died unexpectedly Friday, September 23, 2022 of natural causes. Born on November 19, 1998, in Williamsburg, Virginia, she was the beloved daughter of Ronald and Frances Metzger.
Abby highly valued the importance of education as a pathway to future success. A distinguished 2017 graduate of Jamestown High School, Abby attended Virginia Tech, where she earned a BS degree in Biochemistry in 2021 and served as the president of the pre-pharmacy club. She was in her second year of the PharmD program at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, intent on becoming a community pharmacist specializing in cardiology. Abby was an active member of Kappa Epsilon professional pharmacy fraternity and many other organizations.
She is survived by her parents, Ronald and Frances (Norton) Metzger, of Williamsburg, VA; brothers Ronald and Matthew, and fiancé Caden Darber. Survivors also include her grandparents, Ronald and Marilyn Metzger, Aunts Perry Norton and Jill Metzger, Uncles Jeff Norton, Steve Norton and Jim Salvito, and cousins Robert and Jack Wheeling.
Abby’s vivacious spirit and irrepressible joyfulness were boundless. She packed a lot of living into each day: pre-dawn gym workouts, a rigorous class schedule, active engagement in VCU “Pharmily” life, aiding and supporting friends, and diligent attention to her studies. Abby was very involved in VCU’s APhA-ASP (American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists) and served as their Operation Heart Chair. She was also heavily involved in the upcoming Richmond AHA (American Heart Association) Heart Walk that will occur on October 22. For Abby, life was not a spectator sport, and the many examples of how she chose to live each day will continue to provide strength and inspiration to all who knew her. She made a difference.
Visitation will be at Bucktrout Funeral Home on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Williamsburg Community Chapel on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be livestreamed; link for the livestream will be provided soon.
Memorials in honor of Abby can be made to the American Heart Association; or to the Abby Metzger Academic Excellence Award, which has been established by the VCU School of Pharmacy and will be awarded annually at Commencement to the graduating student(s) with the highest GPA.
