On July 22, 2022 the Lord called home his faithful servant, Michael Lee Martin. Born in Fukuoka Kyushu, Japan, Michael was the firstborn son of McDonald and Melba Mae Martin. He spent much of his youth growing up in the Denbigh area of Newport News, VA and graduated from Denbigh High School in 1968. His son, “Lee” was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1969. Michael received his Associates Degree in Commercial Art from Thomas Nelson Community College in 1970. In August of 1971, Michael met his wife and love of his life, Mary (Libby) Martin at a wedding in Socastee, South Carolina.  They fell instantly in love and were married just a few weeks later on September 11, 1971 and were inseparable for the next 50 years. Michael received his Fine Arts Degree from the Ringling School of Art of Sarasota, FL in 1974. Michael and Libby’s daughter, Tina, was born in 1974 in Sarasota. In 1976, the family decided to make their home in Newport News.

Michael worked for Phil Rea Home Improvements, Bayside Contracting, Balfour Beatty, and Richmond Primoid as a skilled professional. He was a lifelong Christ-follower and leaned heavily on his faith during his latest illness. Michael’s love of art was legendary and was recently reignited. He worked diligently to complete art projects to gift his loved ones. His creative works of art will live on forever with his family.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Mac; his mother, Mae, and his youngest brother, David. He is survived by his eternal love, Libby; his son, Lee (Jennifer); his daughter, Tina (Mike), and his five grandchildren (the lights of his world), Alexa, Jaden, Brianna, Devin and Kamryn; his four brothers, Jimmy (Pam), Kenny (Glinda), Johnny (Helen), and Donald; his special sisters-in-law Patty, Nancy (Johnny), Betty (Chris), Robin (Chicken), Wendy (Mike), Lynn (Bud), and Dee Dee (Billy) and his brothers-in-law, Ruben and Steve. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews who loved Michael so deeply, many of whom list him as their favorite uncle.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in Michael’s honor at Calvary Chapel Newport News, 15553 Warwick Blvd, on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michael’s memory to Calvary Chapel Newport News or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
