Matvei Dmitrievich Matsenov, 21, of Charlottesville

Matvei Dmitrievich Matsenov (Nelsen Williamsburg)

Matvei Matsenov, known as Matt to all in the UVA community, took his own life on the morning of Sunday May 22nd, 2022. Matt was in his fourth year of studies as a computer science major in the School of Engineering.

He is survived by his mother, Lilia Torshina, a resident of Williamsburg, VA, and his father Dmitri Matsenov who resides in Moscow and Vienna.

Matt emigrated to the United States with his mother in 2015, and he was very proud to receive his U.S. citizenship in 2021. He attended John Handley High School in Winchester, VA where he graduated in three years and served as President of the school’s Interact Club. In 2018, Matt was honored as the United Way Youth Volunteer of the Year. As a foreign student at a new school, he found the Interact Club as not only a way to give back to his community, but also a means to make new friends.

Matt, a kind and gentle spirit, was a person always looking to help others. Both in high school and at UVA, Matt developed very strong friendships which he treasured. He was very bright, and despite being a non-native English language speaker, remarkably articulate as well as poised both in large and small gatherings of people. His smile was infectious, and he brought great light into the lives of those who knew them. He also had a wicked wit and was a great aficionado of computer games.

His all too early death came as a devastating shock to all his friends and family, and his absence leaves an unifiable hole in their lives.

A service to celebrate his life will be held in June in Williamsburg.
