LACKEY — Wayne Opie was called to eternal rest on Monday, January 17, 2022. He was born on September 20, 1963, the youngest of eight siblings to the late Edgar Opie and Alberta Morris Opie.
Wayne was a native of Lackey, Virginia and was educated in the York County Public School system. Wayne joined the United States Air Force in 1986 where he served and was honorably discharged after twelve years of service. He also worked for John Deere and then the United States Postal Service.
Wayne was a loving and devoted father, brother, uncle, and friend. He was always joyful and greeted you with a smile. He made a conscious effort to be with family even though he was battling his own health issues. Wayne was a talented musician and loved playing the bass guitar, keyboard, and drums. Wayne shared his musical talents with others particularly at his church. He was a faithful member of Grazing Mountains Church in North Carolina for 18 years. During his membership, Wayne was the head of the Deacon Board and Minister of Music Board.
Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Rosalyn White. He leaves behind to cherish his memories one son, Ricardo Opie; six siblings, Earl Opie (Julia), Pamela Askew (Roger), Dale Opie (Elaine), Belinda Jefferson (Wilbur), Thaddeus Opie (Deborah), and Patricia Martin (Anthony); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
A homegoing service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2022, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Mr. Opie may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Facial coverings are required for all services.
