NEWPORT NEWS — Gloria Scott Strickland, 79, passed away peacefully at home on November 11, 2021. She was born in Newport News, VA to Linwood and Emily Scott. Gloria grew up in the Newport News Newmarket area and graduated from Warwick High School. Gloria worked many places throughout the years including managing the Inn Place in the 1980’s and working at Nick’s Seafood Pavilion in Yorktown.
She enjoyed gardening, watching all sports, with the Washington Nationals, Washington Redskins and watching her grandson, Bailey, play baseball amongst her favorites. She never missed an opportunity to watch her grandchildren in various activities. She had many dogs throughout her life that she loved unconditionally, including Isabel who rarely left her side the past few years. She loved Elvis Presley whom she mentioned often, because she kissed him at the age of 14.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and “Big Sister”, Betty Jane McFarland Moody. She was the best daughter, mother, grandmother and friend. Gloria is survived by her three sons, Scott (Jackie), Jeffrey (Renee) and Christopher (Cindy); 5 grandchildren, Shannon Detrick (Kevin), Ashlee, Brittany Bourque (Adam), Danielle (Mark), and Bailey (Shanice); 11 great-grandchildren, Bryce, Calianne, Kensley, Rilee, Kaylin, Harper, Jaxson, Avery, Landry, Lawson and Braylen and many first cousins from the Scott side of her family that she loved very much, including Kimberly Golden who would visit her often the last few years. She loved Kimberly very much! The last few years Shannon and Avery would visit often. She adored Avery! We would like to thank Mary Beth, NP from TPMG for her devoted care and Shanice Pergerson and Dana Beasley for their help and compassion in times of need.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, VA with visitation to follow. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
