WILLIAMSBURG — Carla D. Roosma, 96, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021. Carla was born April 18, 1925, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to Simon P. and Wilhelmina Doek. She lived in Haarlem, The Netherlands, during the Nazi occupation of World War II, during which she assisted her father with the distribution of food through the Central Kitchen.
Near the end of the war, she undertook a dangerous bicycle trip to Northern Holland in search of food for her family. She received her secondary education from the Stedelijk Gymnasium (Latin School) Haarlem, The Netherlands, a highly selective secondary school founded in 1389, where she elected a beta path of natural science and mathematics. After graduation, she was employed by Tjeenk Willink, an old publishing company, where her responsibilities included translating Greek and Latin texts for revised and updated editions of various publications.
On Sept. 23, 1950, she married Jentje J. Roosma, an electrical engineer (P.E.) in the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem. She immigrated to the United States on March 9, 1951, and became a U.S. citizen. She lived in several states on the East Coast from New England to Georgia while raising her family. A voracious reader, she never missed the Sunday edition of The New York Times or The New York Times crossword puzzle. She traveled extensively, created many original cross-stitch samplers, beautiful landscape oil paintings, and enjoyed cooking for her family.
Carla was preceded in death by her husband Jentje J. Roosma, and is survived by her three children, Jacob (Christine) of Princeton N.J., Michael (Jean) of Laurel Md., and Christina Beitzell (George) of Williamsburg; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Kaillou and Saskia.
