WILLIAMSBURG — Glenn Winstead Sr., 92, many of whom knew him as “Red,” peacefully passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
Glenn was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Nash County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Eula Winstead; sisters, Jean Bryan and Magdalene Drake; beloved wife, Betty Winstead; and youngest daughter, Susan Lawson.
Glenn was a high school graduate and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from Dec. 8, 1950, to Dec. 2, 1952, when he was discharged honorably. Glenn celebrated 50 years of service, under the authorization of the Department of Defense, on Oct. 5, 2003. He later continued contract work with the government. Glenn very much enjoyed his position as an instructor and was devoted to the individuals he trained. He rarely, if ever, missed a day of work.
Glenn is survived by his twin daughters, Lynn Winstead and Dorothy Wing, and her husband, Richard; son, Wes Winstead; son-in-law, Ken Lawson; nephews, George Mahone Jr., and his wife, Renee, Bob Bryan, and his wife, Barbara; and niece, Debbie Holland, and her husband, Rick, and their families. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Sam Wing, Brittany Lawson, Karen Griffin and Mikey Israel.
Visitation will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 809 South Henry St., Williamsburg, officiated by Scott Salsman from James River Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg.
