WILLIAMSBURG — Hattie Cumber Cameron, 70, affectionately known as “Andy,” was called home Wednesday, July 8, 2020. She was born in Williamsburg to Martha Cumber Lomax and the late James Cumber. She was raised by Martha and the late Purcell A. Lomax Sr.
She graduated with the Class of 1968 from York High School and is a Class of 1974 alum of Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). Hattie worked many years with Newport News Public Schools as a teacher at Lee Hall Elementary School.
In addition to her love for teaching, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially playing with her grandson, Jahmani. She was a devoted member of Colossian Baptist Church, where she served on the Greeters and Pastoral Care ministries. We celebrate the life of Hattie because she served as a vivid reminder of the promise and possibilities of each new day.
Hattie was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, George D. Cameron Jr.
She leaves to mourn and cherish her fond memories four children, Carleen Cameron, George Cameron III (friend, Karen Rottkamp), Shavonne Cameron and Damien Cameron (Courtney); grandsons, DeJuan Cameron and Jahmani Cameron, and grandson at heart, Keiji Rottkamp; mother, Martha C. Lomax; siblings, Purcell Lomax Jr., Bruce Lomax, Don Lomax (Jeanetter) and Rita Johnson (Winston); sisters-in-love, Andrea Turner (DeWitt) and Anita Swinton (Derius); aunt, Hazel Pierce; and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
Mrs. Cameron may be viewed from noon to 5 p.m., Friday, July 31, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Hattie to the National Kidney Foundation or Go Red For Women initiative.
Share online condolences with the family at Whiting’s Funeral Home.
