Melvina Washington Kelly, 64, remembered for her philanthropic spirit

Melvina Washington Kelly, 64, of Newport News, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, with her family by her side. She was born April 21, 1954, daughter of the late Clifton and Rachel Washington Sr., in Williamsburg.

She was educated in the James City County Public Schools and continued her formal education in Telecommunications in Queens, New York.

Melvina was a master of many skills. She was an accomplished contractor, tailor and chef. She had a philanthropic spirit and was ready and willing to help anyone in need. She was especially passionate about caring for her mother, sister and baby Aniah. She always opened her home to prepare her famous Sunday buffet and smorgasbord for family and friends.

Melvina married the late Mallachi Kelly. and they built a life together in New York and South Carolina.

Melvina was preceded in death by her husband, grandparents, father, stepfather, brother and other close relatives. She leaves to cherish her love and fond memories, her mother, Rachel Reid; stepmother, Sandra Washington; daughters, Totena Washington, Stephanie Washington (Troy) and Leslie Washington; and nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, stepchildren, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, godchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Kelly may be viewed from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 3, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, at Whiting’s Chapel.
