Frances Currell Treakle Rountree, 92, of Newport News, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018. Frances was born to the late Muriel and Eubank Treakle.
She graduated Longwood Teachers College and taught at Warwick High School before she met and married Charles Lee Rountree Jr., making their home in Newport News. They had three children, Craig, Jeff and Susan. She loved to sew, cook, garden, played a great game of bridge and loved to ballroom dance and square dance with Charles Lee. Oh, did she love a good game of Scrabble; she made everyone follow the rules!
She endured many years of camping on Lake Gaston and getting sprayed by her boys on water skis. She wouldn’t step foot in the boat unless she knew the water would be “slick as glass.” She loved all of her many years owning her beach cottage on the OBX, always inviting friends and family to enjoy time with her. She spent a number of years taking cruises with friends, and visiting many places. She was affectionately known as “Fanny” to some, but to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was Gaga or Grandma.
Her dedication to her family shone through everything that she did, with her love and devotion serving as a beacon and example as to how a life should be lived. She had a sharp wit and would put you in your place while supporting and encouraging you to the highest. You always knew where you stood. Her faith was unwavering. Frances enjoyed being a substitute teacher for many years, making a difference in lots of little lives.
For the last 16 years, she lived at The Chesapeake Retirement Community, where she was an ambassador and served on the worship committee. She would be the first person to welcome and greet a newcomer to the community by presenting them with a loaf of her famous banana bread. She was a member of Warwick United Church of Christ and the Women’s Circle. She later joined First United Church of Christ in Hampton.
She was preceded too early in death by her beloved husband of 28 years, Charles Lee Rountree Jr. Frances is lovingly remembered by her sons, Craig Rountree and Jeff Rountree (Lori); daughter, Susan Rountree Scott (Roger); daughter-in-law, Debbie Rountree; grandchildren, Brandon Scott (Hannah), Cory Scott and Ryan Scott, Morgan Rountree, Cameron Rountree, Colton Nichols, Katelyn White (Josh), Tracie Eagle-Smith (Todd), Danielle Beaudry (James); great-grandchildren, Taylor Beaudry, Ava Scott, Silas Scott, Jesse Eagle, Katelyn Eagle and Devon Smith; sister, Virginia Marshburn; sister-in-laws, Peggy Chesney (Ken) and Barbara Rountree; as well as many nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the staff at The Chesapeake Retirement Community. We appreciate all of the kindness in taking care of mom the last few years.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at the funeral home. A committal service will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Benevolence Fund at The Chesapeake Retirement Community.
