Dorothy Marie “Dot” Richardson, 82, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. She was born May 20, 1936, to Floyd Strickland and Ruthie Mae Reed in Tuscumbia, Alabama.
Dot was a U.S. Air Force/Civil Service wife for 41 years, having lived in places such as Texas, Japan, Alaska, Florida and finally settling in Tabb, Virginia.
She was a cafeteria worker at York County schools for over 10 years. Dot was an avid bowler and quilt maker. She crafted over 100 quilts, at least one for each family member. Dot was a member of the Tidal Waves Square Dance Club for many years. She served as the club’s first lady, secretary/treasurer, and class coordinator. Dot was the Virginia State Square and Round Dance Convention director in 2013 along with her husband. They were also the Region 5 (Tidewater Area) state directors for many years. Dot was a member of Northside Christian Church.
Dot is survived by her husband of 63 years, George “G.T.” Richardson of Tabb; daughters, Jeanne, and her husband, Jim Hughes, of Hampton, and Jo, and her husband, Bill Boyd, of Tabb; two sisters, Jean Wisdom of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and Donnie Jo Vines, of Mount Olive, Mississippi; two brothers, Jimmie Strickland of Florence, Alabama, and Lois Eugene Strickland; five grandchildren, Jason Dudley, and his wife, Christina, Joy Dudley, Colleen Dudley, Shane Boyd, and his wife, Amanda, and Colin Boyd; and three great-grandchildren, Oliver, Margaux and Whitaker Dudley.
Dot never met a stranger. She doted on her friends and family and loved them dearly. The family would like to thank the many very special and loving friends, who are too many to name, for their love and support.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Northside Christian Church with a reception following in the Student Center. A private burial will be held later next week in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
