
On Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, Elvie “Red” Speight Sr., 82, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior.
Elvie was born April 29, 1936, in Chesapeake to Raynor and Helen Speight. He graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1954 and lettered in multiple sports. After high school, Elvie enlisted in the U.S. Marines, where he proudly served his country for three years.
After leaving the service, he entered the apprentice program at Norshipco, where he graduated after four years, and continued to work for 42 years. He retired from Norshipco as an operation’s manager for commercial programs. After retirement, he went to work for Cahoon Plantation Golf course, where he enjoyed working with customers and the community. Elvie had a passion for youth, sports and church. He played and coached in the church and city league softball and basketball. He served as both an elder and deacon in his church. He loved the time he spent together with his wife traveling and doing life. He was known for his wit and kind, compassionate spirit.
Elvie was preceded in death by his father, Raynor; and his mother, Helen; as well as sister, Thelma Ferrell.
He is survived by his wonderful wife of many years, Jennifer, who he wholeheartedly cherished; two children, Randy Speight, and his wife, Margie, Carrie Gentile, and her husband, Tony; three granddaughters, Nicole Roccaforte, Victoria Greene and Taylor Banks; grandson, Derek Speight; four great-grandchildren, Ben, Caroline, Micah and Emma; and his brother, Kenny, and his wife, Rhoda.
The family will gather from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the funeral home.
