Alton ‘Doc’ Turner, 91, retired from Oceana Naval Air Station after 30 years

Alton ‘Doc’ Turner, 91, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 10th. Doc was born to the late John Herbert and Bessie Lee Babb Turner in Sedley, Va.

He spent his childhood in Hopewell, Va., where he had fond memories of biking on ‘lippity dips’ and attending Hopewell High. He retired from Oceana Naval Air Station after 30 years as a civil servant and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He enjoyed horse racing, playing cards and crabbing.

Doc loved and cared for his family and friends. Spending time with his children and grandchildren brought him much joy. He was a devoted husband and father.

As the youngest of 11, Doc was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Joyner, Elsie Plum, Mamie Howlett, Mary Matthews, Alma Johnson and Louise Hartsell; brothers, Leroy Turner, Beamon Turner, Joe Turner and Jimmy Turner; and daughter-in-law, Delores Turner.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Joyce Shipp Turner; daughters, Linda Weddle (Wayne) and June Kernutt (Martin); son, John Turner; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at noon Saturday, May 13, with a service following at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk.
