Lorraine Lee Pledger, 89, retired from the Virginia Beach school system after 12 years of service

Lorraine Lee Pledger, 89, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016. She was a native of Old Princess Anne County, the daughter of the late Moses and Mary Land Lee. Lorraine was a graduate of Kempsville High School, class of 1945.

After the birth of her first daughter, Myra, born with Down Syndrome, she became a member of the Tidewater Associations for Retarded Children and pursued her education in the field of special education.

Mrs. Pledger was a faculty member for Tidewater Association for Retarded Children (TARC) for 20 years, in both Norfolk and Portsmouth. From 1970 to 1972, she opened and supervised Holiday House, a respite facility for the handicapped, under the auspices of TARC. She was the recipient of a plaque for her 20 years of distinguished and dedicated service.

Mrs. Pledger retired from the Virginia Beach school system after 12 years of service as a teacher’s assistant, receiving a certificate of appreciation for years of service. In 1988, quoting Lorraine, ‘It was a privilege to serve the cause of the mentally handicapped helping each child reach his or her potential.’

Lorraine was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years and was also a member of the MUM Women, receiving the Special Mission Recognition pin. She was also a member of the Dyna Tyson, Marjorie Tyson Circle. Mrs. Pledger was an active member of the Homestead Woman’s Club.

Her greatest accomplishments were sharing her life with her loving husband, Carl, and their devotion to their children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Pledger was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl Glen Pledger; and daughter, Myra Lee Pledger. Lorraine was the youngest of 10 children, preceded in death by all nine siblings.

She is survived by two daughters, Cindy P. and John Lowe of Ivor and Martha P. and Mark Miciotto of Virginia Beach. She was a loving Mamaw to her grandchildren, Marindy and Don Creef, Morgan and Daniel Casper and Carl Glen and Kendall Miciotto; step-grandchildren, Winston, Matthew and Kelsey Lowe; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her special nephew, LeRoy Davis Jr. and his wife.

The family will receive friends at from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
