Hubert Claytor Gray Jr., 98, master carpenter who worked for the railroad and port, he loved the land

Hubert Claytor Gray Jr. died peacefully in his home seven weeks from his 99th birthday on January 14, 2016.

Hubert has been reunited with his beloved wife of sixty eight years, Shirley Leah Nichols Gray. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Hubert was born in Hopkins, South Carolina, the son of Hubert Claytor Gray, Sr. and Etta Estelle Martin Gray and grew up in Hampton/Norfolk area. After serving in the Army in World War II, he built his home in Virginia Beach. Hubert worked for the Virginia Railroad until its merger and then moved to the Virginia State Port Authority until his retirement. Hubert loved the land and his huge garden brought him tremendous joy. He was a master carpenter who could build anything.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother H. Glenn Gray and wife Delores, Virginia Beach; daughter, Sharon Leah Gray and husband Carlton Hill, Virginia Beach; grandson, B. Paul Gray, Greenwich, CT; granddaughter Susan Leah Wilkins and husband Walter, Virginia Beach; and those who provided care and compassion during his final months.
In addition to family and friends, he will be missed by his neighbors in the Little Haven Community in which he lived for more than seventy years.

The family received friends on January 21, 2016 in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel in Virginia Beach. A funeral service will be held on Friday January 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. A reception will follow in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Hubert’s honor.
