
Rose Ellen Lane Wadsworth, of Virginia Beach, died Nov. 17, 2015, at the age of 89.
She was the daughter of the late Russel W. Lane and Bettie O. (Vaughan) Lane. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Wadsworth Jr.
Ellen was a graduate of Creeds School, when it was both elementary and high school. In 1947, she graduated from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. She taught drama at Maury High School for three years. Then, she left teaching to raise her five children. When the children were older, she returned to teaching English at Kellam High School. She taught at Kellam until she retired at age 64.
Ellen and George were married for 62 years. During that time they enjoyed traveling, RVing and most especially, they enjoyed 20 years of spending most of the winter in Marco Island, Florida with many of their Norfolk friends.
Every Sunday, their children and grandchildren would come home to eat and socialize. The grandchildren were more like brothers and sisters instead of unknown cousins. They enjoyed being and playing together. Ellen was a member of Charity United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and member of the Administrative Board.
Her survivors include three daughters, Ellen Lane Wadsworth and husband John Williams, Alice Ashley and her husband Pat and Maryellen Kroll and her husband Jeff; two sons, George Wadsworth III and his wife Linda and Robert Wadsworth II and his wife Michele; grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Susan and their daughter Olivia (great-grandchild), David, Andrew, Terry, Joshua, Alex, Heather, Ashley, Rachel, Robert III and Cary and her husband Brant and their two children (great-grandchildren) Adam and Luke, all of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by her niece, Cymathia Brigman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A church service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at Charity United Methodist Church. The burial will follow at the church cemetery.
