Clarence Woodrow “Woody” Saunders, of Virginia Beach, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at Beth Shalom Village Retirement Community in Virginia Beach. He was 87.
He was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Durham, North Carolina, to Raymond and Sallie Saunders. Woody’s wife, Mary Celestine Saunders; brother, Raymond Wesley Saunders; and sister, Hazel Boyles preceded him in death.
Woody was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach where he retired after 40+ years as an aircraft mechanic from NARF, the Naval Air Rework Facility, in Norfolk. In his younger years he loved to hunt and fish. Later in life he enjoyed great food and going to church on Sunday.
Surviving loved ones include his daughter, Mary Best; sons, Gerald Hofstede, Joe Saunders and Troy Saunders; daughters-in-law, Kathi Saunders and Dolly Saunders; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at the funeral home with the burial at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507, which has taken wonderful care of his granddaughter Tiffany, whom he loved so much.
