Pernell “Nellie” Jenkins Jones, 91, enjoyed bingo and Sunday drives on the Colonial Parkway

Pernell “Nellie” Jenkins Jones died Aug. 6, 2014, at her residence. She was 91.

The daughter of the late Cora and Willie Jenkins, she was born on Dec. 31, 1922, in Williamsburg. On Aug. 5, 1959, she was joined in holy matrimony with the late William Steve Jones in Williamsburg. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend.

At an early age, Mrs. Jones accepted Jesus as her savior and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church in Lightfoot. She was a devoted member of the Gleaners and served many years on the Hospitality Committee. In addition, she loved spending time with her family, playing bingo and Sunday drives on the Colonial Parkway. After many years of employment in Guest Services, she retired from the Federal Government as a supervisor of Guest Relations.

She is survived by her two daughters, Tammie Lumbley (Carlton) and Linda Davis; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Annie Pearl Coleman and Sarah Goodwin (James); three brothers-in-law, John Jones, Anderson Jones (Elizabeth) and Charlie Jones (Lula); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A wake will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A funeral service, celebrating her life, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Zion Baptist Church, Lightfoot. Mrs. Jones may be viewed 2 hours prior to her service at the church. Entombment will follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
