Grant Wilbur Olson, of Williamsburg, died Aug. 7, 2014, at the age of 92.
He was born in Chicago and met the love of his life, his wife Norma, at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Olson was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and a mentor and friend to many. He was committed to the cause of democracy and equality in both his personal and professional lives. He began his career in intelligence as a code breaker in India during WWII. He continued his career after the war during which he and his wife and their four children spent many years representing the United States at embassies around Scandinavia and the continent.
Upon retirement as a career diplomat in 1982, they moved to Williamsburg, where they have enjoyed a rich cultural life.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughters Lane, BJ (Kurt) and Lise; son, Kip (Robyn); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church followed by a reception.
