Raymond Charles Jahr, 71, explored the sunken ship graveyard of Truk Lagoon in Micronesia

Raymond Charles Jahr, of Williamsburg, died July 23, 2014, after a brave and hard-fought battle with esophageal cancer. He was 71.

He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, “Opa” and friend who will be deeply missed. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 12, 1943. He and his wife Trudy just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May.

After working as an auto mechanic as a young man, Mr. Jahr worked for NY Telephone Co. for over 30 years and retired as a foreman. Retirement brought the couple to Williamsburg in 1996 where he became a very active and dedicated member of his neighborhood’s HOA, holding multiple positions, including serving as president of the board of Berkeley’s Green.

Mr. Jahr enjoyed a very active lifestyle starting from a young age which included boating, fishing and kayaking. He even went white water rafting down the Colorado River! He loved being on the water, was an avid scuba diver for many years and served as president of the Long Island Divers Association. He logged countless dives from the Atlantic to the Pacific, some of which included famous shipwrecks off the coast of Long Island as well as Truk Lagoon in Micronesia!

Mr. Jahr was the loving father of three daughters, Theresa Calabrese and husband, James, of Williamsburg, Susan Lepore and husband, Vincent, of Milford, Pa. and Laura Glum and husband, Terrence, of Massapequa Park, N.Y. He was also the proud “Opa” of nine: Carly and Kate Calabrese, Emily, Nicholas and Abigail Lepore and Olivia, Cassidy, Stevie Rae and Dennis Glum.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Interment will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, N.Y.
