David Glenn Newell, of Yorktown, died Friday, May 9, 2014. He was 54.
He retired from Newport News Shipyard in January after 34 years of service. Mr. Newell volunteered in the special education classrooms at Coventry and Yorktown elementary schools. His favorite pastime was attending southern gospel music concerts, especially “The Hoppers.”
Mr. Newell was preceded in death by his father, Red Newell; a brother, Lee Newell; maternal grandparents, Jesse and Mary Phillips; and paternal grandparents Rosa and Robert Newell.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandy P. Newell; his mother, Nell Newell; two sisters, Rose Burnette (Steve) and Pearl Bartram (Rick); a brother, Jesse Newell; a sister-in-law, Debbie Panak; father-in-law, Martin Panak; nieces and nephews, Steve Jr., Todd, Kim, Denise, Dana and Dennis; great-nieces and nephews, Michael, Ashley, Mikaela, Trae, Corinna, Allen, Danielle, Katie, Briyanna, Nakyah and Jazmyne.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church, 80 Groome Road, Newport News, VA 23601. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the church. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15th at Sunny Slope Cemetery, West Point.
