Ernest Roland Bartlett, Jr., of Williamsburg, died peacefully Saturday, March 22, 2014, with his sister and brother by his side. He was 53.
Mr. Bartlett, or “Blue,” as he was called by his “brothers” in Highland Park, attended Lafayette High School. He shared his father’s love for cooking and followed in his footsteps, working at King’s Arms Tavern for 21 years.
He loved fishing and hunting, but his greatest love was his wife, Sylvia and vacationing with her to no place in particular. Mr. Bartlett and his wife were married for 17 years, but their love spanned for almost 30.
Mr. Bartlett was a quiet man who was very protective of his family, especially his wife and only niece. He was patient and kind, although his size and booming voice intimidated those who did not know him. He took pride in caring for his mother whom he would spend hours with in Walmart. The two of them had a special bond. He always made others laugh, no matter the situation and he could always be found at Highland Park, the home he loved, with his friends or his mom, whom he affectionately called “Old Folk.”
He was born March 26, 1960, in Williamsburg, the first born to Ernest and Ethel Bartlett. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest, Sr. and many aunts and uncles whom he cherished.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia; stepdaughter, Terry Hundley; brothers, John and Terry; sister, whom he called “Penny,” Audra; his only niece whom he loved to spoil, Tasja; aunt, Annette White; very special cousin, who was like a brother, James “Bubba” Wallace; close friends, Marvette Wallace, Gervis Hundley and Bruce Williams; and a host of cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Family and friends will assemble by 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at 408 Roycroft Street for the funeral service beginning at noon at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 4002 Ironbound Road, with Pastor Ronald A. Ellis and the Rev. Johnny Wallace officiating. Interment to follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Charles City.
Please leave online condolences for the family at Whiting’s Funeral Home.
