Strong Finish Powers UVA Past Tribe Women’s Hoops

(Tribe Athletics)

CHARLOTTESVILLE — A fourth quarter charge by Virginia ended up being too much, as the William & Mary women’s basketball team fell to the Cavaliers 81-50 at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday.

Cassidy Geddes, who scored a team-high and season-high 14 points, hit back-to-back jumpers to cut the UVA lead to 8-6 with 4:40 to play in the first quarter.

The Hoos responded with a 6-0 run before the spurt was ended by a pair pf Kayla Beckwith free throws. The Tribe trailed 14-8 after one.

Down 23-11 three minutes into the second, Beckwith scored again, before Anahi-Lee Cauley chipped in four points to help W&M keep pace with the Cavaliers.

Bella Nascimento’s corner three was the last Tribe field goal of the half with 2:38 to play, and UVA led 34-23 after 20 minutes.

The first seven minutes of the third frame were a bright spot for the Green and Gold, with Nylah Young scoring four consecutive points.

Minutes later Geddes knocked down a trey to cut the Hoos’ lead to single digits for the first time in a while, 40- 31, with 4:49 to go in the quarter.

Another Young jumper and free throw by Rebekah Frisby-Smith made it a 40-34 game with 3:02 on the clock in the third, but that was as close as W&M would get.

UVA won the rest of the frame 13-7 to go ahead 53-41, then proceeded to outscore the Tribe 27-10 in the fourth quarter to coast to a 81-50 win and improve to 3-0.

W&M falls to 0-4 on the year. They had three players in double-figures on the night, led by Geddes’ 14. Young was good for 13 in the losing effort and Nascimento 12.

Beckwith had a career-high 10 rebounds to go with her seven points on the night.
